[ REPUBLIC ACT NO. 857, June 16, 1953 ]

AN ACT TO PUNISH ANY PUBLIC OFFICER OR EMPLOYEE WHO SHALL OBSTRUCT, PROHIBIT, OR OTHERWISE PREVENT THE EXERCISE OF THE RIGHT OF ATTORNEYS TO VISIT AND CONFER WITH PERSONS ARRESTED.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Philippines in Congress assembled: SECTION 1. Any public officer or employee who shall obstruct, prohibit, or otherwise prevent an attorney entitled to practice in the courts of the Philippines from visiting and conferring privately with a person arrested, at any hour of the day or, in urgent cases, of the night, said visit and conference being requested by the person arrested or by another acting in his behalf, shall be punished by arresto mayor. SEC. 2. All acts or parts of acts inconsistent with the provisions of this Act are hereby repealed. SEC. 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval. Approved, June 16, 1953.
